If you’re not already familiar with White Suede designer Jacqui Demkiw, now’s the perfect time to get acquainted. The Melbourne-based label is new to Myer this season and we’re loving the modern, sculptural dresses featuring abstract digital prints.
Inspired by a love of travel, the new collection is aptly named Architectural Wanderlust and references some of Jacqui’s favourite holiday destinations including Paris and Marrakech. Strong architectural lines mirroring the urban skyline meet with tribal detailing and 3D layering for a bold contrast.
We sat down with Jacqui Demkiw to chat inspirations, summer style and martinis in Bali.
Myer: What’s your style motto?
Jacqui Demkiw: Be your own muse.
M: Tell us about the collection…
JD: This collection has been an evolution of creative processes between sculpture, digital printing, mesh draping and overall structured shapes. To highlight the complex architecture and landscapes of this collection, I have loved using “techno” fabrics including synthetic sports mesh to create 3D illusions within our designs.
M: How do you start designing a collection for summer?
JD: I love transforming, flipping, mirroring and making something quite normal become very abstract. Most of the imagery I use is inspired by my life experiences and for this new collection I wanted to feature heavily my travels to Marrakech in Morocco. I was there last May. The desert, the arid landscape, amazing people, spices, hand crafts and then the vivid colour were amazingly beautiful, not to mention the dreamlike Riads in this 1000 year old city.
M: Can you tell us a summer style tip?
JD: Wear fresh make up – copper tones to give you a fresh look but not too overdone.
M: What’s your beach-side drink of choice?
HD: A Very Berry Martini – my favourite was from KU DE TA in Bali. Its similar to a cosmo but with the freshness of real berries.
