New Season Classic Minimalism with Tome

Making their runway debut at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week in New York last season, design duo Tome had their muse, the artist Shirin Neshat sitting front row. In exile from her native Iran, designers Ryan Lobo and Ramon Martin have used her personal style and graceful strength as a starting point for a sleek collection of minimal and elegant pieces including pencil skirts and expertly draped dresses.

Shirin Neshat’s work has frequently focused on the mid-century Egyptian singer Umm Kulthum, which explains the subtle nod to ‘40s and ‘50s couture in the collection. A more grown up collection, this season Tome offers fuller shapes that recall the classic New Look silhouettes of the 1950s Parisian fashion houses. Tunics, coats and dresses in muted monochrome with lashings of pink and red, bring the decadence of the ‘30s while maintaing the restraint of a modern minimalist woman.

Here’s Ryan Lobo and Ramon Martin’s thoughts on Spring Summer 2015:

Myer: Who is the TOME woman?
Ryan Lobo and Ramon Martin: She is every woman.

M: What’s the one key piece this season she absolutely must have?
RL & RM: A white shirt.

M: Describe your design style in three words…
RL & RM: Soft power.

M: Describe the new collection in one sentence…
RL & RM: It’s a venerable mediation on the art of Shirin Neshat and music of Umm Kalthum.

M: Can you tell us a summer style tip?
RL & RM: Wear sunscreen.

M: Describe your perfect summer’s day!
RL & RM: Sleep, food, beach, food, cocktails, food, sleep.
