We love a collection that requires attitude to wear. Especially, when it’s one as bold and structured as the new Karen Walker collection.
Each season sees the designer draw on inspiration from strong and irreverent women, and this season is no exception. It’s all about the subversive, utilitarian style of the suffragettes.
We’ll see masculinity meet femininity as Walker transforms suffragette symbols including gloved hands, tools and slogans into printed motifs and embellished hardware – think strong tailoring, sharp collars and simple lines paired with ruffles, embroidery and quirky prints.
We grabbed 5 minutes with Karen Walker to find out more:
Myer: How would you describe your style?
Karen Walker: Optimistic and utilitarian.
M: How did you start designing this collection?
KW: By imagining what’s not in our girl’s wardrobe.
M: What’s the one key piece this season that’s an absolute must-have?
KW: The Suffragettes Dress in Angel Battle Silk.
M: We love that one too! What themes and techniques have you featured in this collection?
KW: We’ve juxtaposed work-ready shapes with ruffles, needlepoint, embroidery and silk devoré in rich plum. This contrast moves further with patterns of gloved hands, tools, broken hearts, brutal roses and fighting angels.
M: What trends are you inspired by at the moment?
KW: At the moment, I’m loving vintage work-wear.
