Now we know denim is a staple in pretty much everyone’s wardrobe, but with the new season upon us now’s the best time to add some new favourites to your collection of trusty pieces. From picking the perfect wash to finding new ways to style your shorts, these are the looks and tips you need to get your denim wardrobe sorted for summer.
50 Shades of Denim
Gone are the days of the ‘simple blue jean’ – these days you can take your pick from a huge range of colours, washes, treatments and styles! For this season, lighter vintage washes are your friend and always look good worn back with simple tees and singlets. Darker washes instantly smarten up your look and go well with a perfectly fitted collared shirt. Round out your denim wardrobe with a good pair of black jeans – they’re super versatile and can be dressed up or down.
Relaxed styles of denim tend to be looser through the lower leg, so cuff and roll them up to expose the ankle. Skinny jeans still have their place and work best with slim-line shirts and a lightweight bomber jacket. Sneakers are continuing to have their moment and work well with almost any denim style, but when it comes to styling think more Jay-Z than Jerry Seinfeld.

Denim on Denim
Double denim might have a bad rep but it’s time to shake off those bad ‘90s memories because when worn well this look can show off some serious style know-how. Be sure to mix up different washes and textures to make it feel modern – try classic blue jeans with a lightweight, chambray shirt. Add a washed & worn tan belt to break up the blues and a classic white tee is a great option if you want to wear the shirt open. Throw on some thongs, and you’re good to go.
If double denim still makes you nervous, opt for a denim vest worn over a tee or checked shirt – it’s a good way to move into this trend without fully committing! Just don’t forget to mis-match your colours or washes to avoid a full denim suit look.

For when it’s too hot to go full-length, a pair of denim shorts is without a doubt your summer saviour. Coloured denim in shades of grey and green are perfect festival options, while basic vintage blues can be done pretty much anywhere, anytime. If you need to be a bit more dressed up, slim-fit shirts with a more fitted short will do the job and a good boat shoe or sneaker will finish off the look perfectly. If you’re hitting the beach then no top required… but don’t forget to slip slop slap!
