Jolyon Mason is one of Australia’s most well respected Stylists & Creative Directors, having worked in the industry for over a decade with publications such as GQ, Vogue Australia and Russh just to name a few. His unique style is loved by designers and celebrities alike, with Toni Maticevski and Face of Myer, Jennifer Hawkins, just some of his big name regular clients, so naturally we had to have him on board to style our SS15 Fashion Launch, happening at 7:30pm AEST tonight!
Onsite busily prepping for the show, we managed to grab 5 minutes with Jolyon backstage to talk about his inspirations and what exactly goes into styling a show…
Myer: Tell us about the hair & makeup for the show?
Jolyon: The SS15 campaign is all about tropical so rather than the obvious beach hair and golden glow (It is a show after all!) I was inspired/intrigued by what might be in the water, hiding in the coral reefs of the shoreline. It made me think of Mermaids and sea creatures. Hence the coral inspired coiffure. Soft pinks, Lilacs, Water blues and Spearmint greens in the hair. The beautiful sun kissed/ peach toned make up by Napoleon adds a beautiful sense of innocent romanticism. We’ve been lucky working with Kevin Murphy and Napoleon Perdis as our official sponsors for the show.
M: The models look amazing, we love the pastel hair! Tell us about the first steps you take in preparing the styling for a show?
J: I love a mood board so I will spend a day or so looking for inspiring images. Art, music, fashion, anime and films have all helped to inspire this season’s launch. I’m currently obsessed with FKA and I have been listening to her on repeat. Also The Little Mermaid – I watched it coming back from Paris Men’s collections
M: How long does it take you to prepare for an entire Myer runway show?
J: It feels like decades! HA! I would say a good 2 months. One very solid month where it’s meeting with designers organising shoes, jewellery and accessories, hair and make-up trials, castings, styling the collections then finally fittings. It’s a big job.
M: What happens behind the scenes during a show?
J: Its always such a blur. I always feel like I am just scanning all the looks before they exit. I usually have no idea how the show has run until its wrapped.
M: What are your key tips for summer styling?
J: I always think its important to have fun. Be yourself, Express your own individuality and personality.
M: What are your summer must haves?
J: Anything and everything white!
M: Which designers are you loving for summer?
J: Clearly I am biased as I work quite closely with Maticevski but I am so excited about the new stable of designers Alex Perry, By Johnny and Tome are a great addition to the already super strong stable. Yeojin Bae is also a huge favourite. And I am obsessed with Jayson Brunsdon’s collection this season.
