Kicking off the Melbourne Cup Carnival with Derby Day

The Melbourne Cup Carnival got off to a glamorous start today with AAMI Victoria Derby Day, where Australia’s most fashionable descended on Flemington Racecouse dressed in traditional black and white for huge day of Group 1 racing.

Face of Myer Jennifer Hawkins was a standout in a black long-sleeve lace Alex Perry dress and wide-brimmed Melissa Jackson hat, while Kris Smith looked dapper as always in MJ Bale. Myer Ambassadors Lauren Phillips, Jodi Anasta and Kate Peck all opted for white looks, wearing White Suede, Maticevski and by johnny respectively. Laura Dundovic was on trend as always in a voluminous white skirt and black organza top by Aurelio Costarella and a silver headpiece by Kerrie Stanley.

The somewhat gloomy (read: terrible) weather forecast didn’t dampen the spirits of some of our fave celebs, who all came along to the Myer Marquee to find wonderful. Our spring carnival blogger Zoë Foster Blake came with husband Hamish Blake and wore Arthur Galan AG and Cue with a stunning Natalie Bickiki headpiece. We caught up with Hamish who gave us his take on Zoë’s outfit: “Her headpiece was inspired by the Sydney Opera House and she’s wearing a “splayed” black skirt”. Hmm… whatever that means, Hamish! Other celebs in the marquee included Jessinta Campbell, Andy Lee, Lindy & Michael Klim, Tim Robards & Anna Heinrichs, Anthony Callea & Tim Campbell and Tash Oakley.

Over at Myer Fashions on the Field, the competition was stronger than ever. With monochrome ruling the day, racegoers were challenged to reinvent their style and somehow bring something new to the age old black and white look, and this year it was all about delicate headwear and strong structured shapes. We saw lots of voluminous midi-skirts and high necklines, which signaled a return to classic glamour and traditional raceday style. Finer details were important with veiled headpieces and metal detailing the choice of the day. Details were just as important in the Men’s Racewear competition too, with judges looking for touches of personality in raceday ensembles – bright socks, coordinated pocket-squares, shiny tie pins and even rolled up trouser cuffs (something we think we’ll be seeing more of over the coming seasons!).

What an amazing start to the week! Bring on the rest of the Melbourne Cup Carnival.

    • Hi Matthew, Kris’s tie is by MJ Bale and is called the Edsel Grey Stripe tie. It is currently available in our Sydney City, Chadstone and Brisbane stores. Thanks and have a great day!
