Introducing the latest designer small kitchen appliances that embody the unmistakable glamour of the 1950s – the iconic Smeg brand. Designed with the user in mind, these pieces come in classic shapes, great colours and deliver a high performance for all day to day kitchen needs; exactly what we would expect from the world renowned brand, which is steeped in kitchen design history.
Smeg was founded by Vittorio Bertazzoni, whose family entrepreneurial history can be traced back to the 19th century when the first Bertazzoni kitchens were shown at the World Expo in Milan. Bertazzoni first opened the doors to Smeg in 1948 and since this establishment over 60 years ago, the Italian home appliance manufacturer has become a household name in premium kitchen and cooking appliances. Perhaps most well known for their coloured, retro-looking FAB refrigerators (which were actually designed in the late 1990s!), Smeg offers everything from large to small domestic appliances, with each product adhering to their signature elegance, originality and product quality.
Always ahead of their time, in the late 1950’s Smeg launched one of the first home gas cookers with an automatic switch-on function, an oven safety valve and cooking programmer/timer. In the early 1970s Smeg invented the first 60cm, 14 place setting dishwasher and in the same decade produced their very first built-in hobs and ovens.
Despite manufacturing a largely successful range of dishwashers in 1971 under the brand name ‘Dishlex’, it wasn’t until 1986 that the Smeg brand was introduced to Australia and quickly embraced in the homes of many Australians.
Adding to an already impressive list of collaborators, Smeg have enlisted Matteo Bazzicalupo and Raffaella Mangiarotti to design their Small Domestic Appliance Range. Known for their Dandelion lamp which now resides in the MoMa Permanent Collection in New York, Bazzicalupo and Mangiarotti’s approach to design is both rigorous and fluid. Through studying the nature of human interaction with their subject, the two designers manage to draw out interactions with products and innovations never thought possible.
The new Small Appliances range from Smeg was commissioned to be an extension of the iconic FAB retro range (which saw the creation of the now iconic Smeg fridge) a further homage to the golden age of the 50’s, in line with Vittorio Bertazzoni Snr’s vision.
