Having just presented their third runway collection as part of New York Fashion Week in February, Ramon & Ryan of Australian label TOME have quickly developed a cult following. Their directional but wearable designs feature a unique take on modern tailoring, using only the most beautiful fabrications. We caught up with Ramon to talk about the new collection and find out what he’s looking forward to doing while he’s back in Australia.
Ramon Martin and Ryan Lobo, the designers behind TOME, first met at the University of Technology in Sydney in 1998 and formed a close bond from the start. Both went on to successful careers in fashion; Martin designed for fashion brands including Alberta Ferretti, Jean Paul Gaultier and Derek Lam, and Lobo became a buyer and leading stylist. After thirteen years working independently, the two decided that the time was right to launch a label together, and TOME was born in 2010 from a small studio on the Lower East Side of Manhattan.
Myer: What is your design philosophy?
Ramon Martin: We design for every woman.
M: Who is the TOME women?
RM: She is every woman, all the women that we know; our colleagues, our friends; our family members.
M: How and where do you find inspiration for each new collection?
RM: We always have a muse, a woman who is an artist, or craftsperson or political figure who inspires us.
M: Tell us about this most recent collection…
RM: The Spring 2015 collection was inspired by the work of Indian photographer Dayanita Singh. The collection reflects the bright colours and energy of India, the spirit present in her work.
M: How long, from first thought through to the runway show, does a collection take to develop?
RM: We start earlier than the window of development, so before we finish one season, we are already contemplating the next.
M: What has been the highlight of the TOME brand journey thus far?
RM: We love when we are able to connect with the women that inspire us. Iranian artist Shirin Neshat has become a very good friend after inspiring the Fall 14 collection. Jackie Nickerson working with us when she was the muse for resort was also a highlight.
M: What’s the one thing you’re looking forward to doing while you’re back in Australia?
RM: Spending time in the sun with family and friends.
