Karen Walker’s ABC

Say hello to the world of Karen Walker Eau de Parfum! This week the fashion designer launches her first fragrance collection, a trio of scents titled A, B and C. Embodying Karen’s signature optimism, energy and chic-meets-eccentric handwriting, these stunning fragrances are as fresh as they are energetic. We caught up with Karen to find out what goes into designing a series of fragrances…

Myer: Tell us what made you want to create your own series of fragrance?
Karen Walker: Because we have something to say! We only take on new projects when we feel that we have a unique point-of-view or idea and with this, our first trio of fragrances, we feel we have that.  And also having the right collaborative partners and team around us.

M: Tell us a little about each of the fragrances, A,B & C?
KW: A  is the happiness potion. It’s sparkly, bright, herbal and fresh.  It’s a fruity floral with top notes of cassis, crushed mint leaves and grapefruit, heart notes of rose, lily of the valley, green tea and ylang ylang, on a solar musk base. B is feminine and efflorescent.  It’s lush, ripe and delicious.  It’s a delicious floral gourmand with top notes of bergamot, pink pepper, and grapefruit, heart notes of iris, white rose, peach and Sambac Jasmine, and base notes of patchouli, praline, tonka bean, musk and vanilla. C is addictive. It’s compelling, opulent and generous.  It’s creamy, sensual floral with top notes of gardenia, magnolia, mandarin and bergamot, heart notes of tuberose, orange flower, Sambac Jasmine and lily of the valley, and base notes of sandalwood, amber, musk, and cashmere wood.Karen Walker fragrance ABC MyerM: Where did you get the inspiration for the types of scents you’ve used?
KW: We wanted to make a trio with an effortless expression of optimism.  For us, ABC is the first thing that rolls off the tongue when we think about anything being possible. It’s about stimulating creativity.

M: Who was the girl you had in mind when creating each of the fragrances?
KW: Interesting people looking for interesting ideas.

M: What was the process for designing and creating your fragrances?
KW: The whole process, from planning and conceptual briefing to final sign off of juices, was 2 years. It started with initial briefings, dozens of first samples being sent to us, feedback, reworking, and further samples. Our brand partner,  The Six Senses, helped navigate us through the process and put us in touch with the right people at the right time. We have a great perfume evaluator in Paris who worked with us very closely throughout and whose input was invaluable. Halfway through the creative process we visited Charabot’s laboratories and factory in Grasse and also their offices in Paris so we could work even more closely with their creative team. Following on from that dozens more samples were sent to us for feedback, which triggered further reworking of each juice, and finally we had our trio … plus one more to come out later on! Each of the three fragrances we’re launching went through up to six reworks to get them perfect.
