Australia’s largest and most prestigious outdoor fashion event, Myer Fashions on the Field at Flemington, gets underway in just a few weeks. To help you get your outfit on the right track (pun intended), we caught up with 2015 Myer Fashions on the Field Ambassador Georgia Connolly to find out what she expects to see in this year’s competition…
Myer: What are your raceday style tips?
Georgia Connolly: A basic overall rule for dressing for the races is that although it is a day out with your friends, it’s important to remember it’s not an evening event so you shouldn’t dress like it is. Keep it a little bit conservative and leave the miniskirts, crop tops and sequins for the nightclub! Think ladylike dresses, elegant pant suits and demure midi skirts.
Also don’t make your millinery an afterthought. It’s so important to play with different styles and shapes to find the perfect fit for you. If you’re not comfortable wearing a statement headpiece there are lots of other options, like crowns which I think will be huge this Melbourne Cup Carnival.
M: As Myer Fashions on the Field Ambassador, what will you be looking for during the competition?
GC: I will be looking for an outfit that is original, that draws on the past but is totally modern. Contestants should express their own sense of racing style but reference the specific race day dress codes and take into consideration current fashion trends.
So for AAMI Victoria Derby Day I want to see traditional black and white done in a fresh way, think sleek and sophisticated monochrome. On Emirates Melbourne Cup Day I want to see vibrant colours and prints. And Crown Oaks Day is all about feminine looks, think flowy designs reminiscent of the romantic styles of the 70s.
M: What advice would you give to entrants this year?
GC: Whatever style direction you take, the greatest advice I can give you is be comfortable in what you wear. Having confidence will lift your look and you’ll be sure to catch the judge’s eyes! The Melbourne Cup Carnival is such an exciting time of year and Myer Fashions on the Field presents a great chance for people to dress up and show off their style, so don’t forget to have fun and enjoy the day.
M: What’s your number one tip for enjoying a day at the races?
GC: My absolute number one tip for enjoying a day at the races is to dress for the weather. No matter how gorgeous your outfit is, if it’s a cool day make sure you add a blazer or cape. And of course wear comfortable shoes. This year block heels are back and they’re perfect for a stylish but comfortable day at the track
M: What is your earliest memory of the Melbourne Cup Carnival?
GC: I’ve been an active Victoria Racing Club member for many years and have always loved coming to Flemington because it combines some of my greatest passions: horses, racing and of course fashion. My earliest memory of the Melbourne Cup Carnival is entering Fashions on the Field as a 10 year old. I think I saw it on television and decided I wanted to enter, so off I went with my hat, handbag and Best Bets. I came third so it’s a lovely memory to have, especially in my new role as Myer Fashions on the Field Ambassador. Another early memory is back when my parents had a share in Maythehorsebewithu, who ran in the 2001 Emirates Melbourne Cup. He ended up finishing fifth but it was such a huge thrill for all of the connections, my family included. And I’m looking forward to creating new memories as the Myer Fashions on the Field Ambassador for 2015, it’s such a privilege and will no doubt be an experience I will always remember and treasure.
