Oscar de la Renta Myer

New to Myer: Oscar de la Renta

Oscar de la Renta once said that his role as a designer was to make a woman feel her very best. To this day his eponymous label, now under the creative direction of Peter Copping, maintains this ethos, creating beautiful pieces for all women.

Born in the Dominican Republic in 1932, Oscar de la Renta studied painting in Spain which led to him gaining an apprenticeship with Cristobal Balenciaga. After stints at Lanvin and Elizabeth Arden, in 1965 Oscar launched his own ready-to-wear label which has been a go-to for some of the world’s most glamorous women including Audrey Hepburn, Sarah Jessica Parker and Hillary Clinton.

In 2014, Oscar de la Renta passed away and Peter Copping was appointed as the creative director at the Oscar de la Renta label. Copping’s first collection at the helm was Fall 2015, which received incredible reviews. Having presented his Spring Summer 16 collection in New York just last week, we caught up with Peter to find out more about one of our newest labels to Myer.

Myer: How did you start out in the Fashion Industry?
Peter Copping: During my graduate studies, I was invited to work for Christian Lacroix in Paris. Then I accepted a position at Sonia Rykiel which prepared me for a twelve-year tenure at Louis Vuitton overseeing the women’s ready-to-wear collection as Studio Director under Marc Jacobs. In 2009, I joined Nina Ricci as Artistic Director and in October of 2014 I was appointed Creative Director of Oscar de la Renta.

M: Tell us about the Oscar de la Renta woman?
PC: For me the Oscar de la Renta style is like that of an uptown woman. It’s a woman that loves life and dressing up. She is also sophisticated and always refined.

M: Tell us about the inspiration behind the new Spring 16 collection?
PC: I really wanted to marry two of Oscar’s worlds, New York City and Punta Cana, through color, pattern and the house’s general joie de vivre. The skirt suits are a staple for every woman. The skirt and jacket can be worn separately, which make it quite versatile.
