Getting to Know Laura Wells

She’s the stunning new face in our City Chic, Basque Woman and Taking Shape campaigns but she’s more than that. Laura Wells spoke to us about balancing life as an Environmental Scientist while also being one of Australia’s most in-demand models…

Myer: How did you get into modelling?
Laura Wells: I started modelling after being scouted in NYC with my sister who was at that time a straight size model. I was studying a science degree and a law degree and had never dreamt of modelling nor did I think I could or that there was a space in the industry for me at a size 14.
When I returned back to Australia I approached then modelling agency, BGM Models where I was signed and started working a few weeks later. It has been a whirlwind career, something that I had ever dreamed of but I have had some great experiences and am very grateful I have been able to make a positive impact on the lives of many men and women of all ages in terms of them accepting themselves for who they are and the body they have no matter what shape, size or colour it is!

M: What is something people may not know about you?
LW: That I am an environmental scientist with a huge passion for keeping our oceans healthy and protected for the future. I love to be in the water, SCUBA diving, snorkeling and experiencing the magic of the underwater world and I want my children, grand childen and your children and grandchildren to be able to experience that as well. The ocean provides us with food, jobs, joy, health, even the air we breathe so we need to take action to protect it as best we can.

M: How would you describe your personal style?
LW: I like a bit of everything. I’m comfortable being outside and getting dirty in hiking boots and shorts or in a wetsuit or bikini exploring; wearing figure hugging dresses and heels for events or jeans and a t-shirt to cruise around doing errands. I like to step outside of my comfort zone every now and then and wear something that I might not think would suit my personality or shape, and I really enjoy doing that because it opens me up to feeling more secure about my body. There is no right way to wear fashion, do whatever you choose, whatever makes you feel good and whatever makes you the best most productive version of yourself.

M: When you’re not modelling, what do you get up to?
LW: You can find my face down in the ocean exploring or being apart of the science communication and body positive communication areas. I am really trying to expand the notions of living a happy healthy life in a happy healthy environment and I feel the best way to do that is to use the medium of tv/ video presenting.  We need to start looking after ourselves and the world around us and that begins with loving ourselves for who we are and what we look like regardless of what main stream media tells us, and it also means doing our best to leave the legacy of a beautiful healthy planet.

M: What trends are you embracing this Winter?
LW: I love winter boots. Nothing says winter like a pair of long black boots, finger-less gloves and a beautifully tailored trench. There are so many beautiful patterned garments coming out as well, it’s good to breakup all those dark colours with a hint of texture.
