Myer Fashions on the Field Ambassador Stephanie Smith shares her top 5 tips for raceday dressing…
1. Don’t be afraid of colour.
If there was ever a time to wear colour, it’s at the Melbourne Cup Carnival. I always love wearing red, as it’s a simple way to really make a statement with your look. If wearing a solid block colour is a little too much for you, try adding coloured accessories to a neutral dress.
2. Adhere to the dresscode.
The races are a chic event and Flemington has a long-standing traditional dresscode, so keep that in mind when choosing your outfit. Watch the length of your hemlines, forget anything that bares your midriff and avoid strapless tops and dresses at all costs. Take the opportunity to dress like a lady – there really is no better time than the Melbourne Cup Carnival to dress to impress so make the most of it and keep it classy!
3. Millinery is a must. How often do you get the chance to wear a beautiful hat or piece of millinery these days? If you’re like me, then hardly ever I imagine! Make the most of being trackside at Flemington and find something fun to wear on your head. This season I still love a classic boater hat, but I’m also loving the more delicate floral inspired headbands. Wear them with loose wavy hair for a really soft and feminine look.
4. Make it modern.
A lot of people assume racewear is just about girly dresses in classic shapes, but these days it’s a lot more than that. Pants are a great option for the races – I love a chic cigarette leg trouser paired with a fitted blazer or a beautiful palazzo pant worn with a delicate lace top. The options are endless, so don’t feel confined to only dresses – just be sure your outfit is tailored and polished no matter what you’re wearing.
5. Consider entering Myer Fashions on the Field.
I know this isn’t necessarily a racewear tip, but if you really want to know if you’ve nailed your outfit, then enter Flemington’s Myer Fashions on the Field competition. It’s completely free and so much fun. Aside from being in the running to win some amazing prizes, entering gives you the opportunity to have the crème-de-la-crème of Australia’s fashion industry see and judge your look! You can check out the Flemington website here for more details on how you can enter.
