For the better part of the last 150 years, the suit as we know it today has undeniably played a significant role in men’s fashion. Its roots date back to the 17th century, which has evolved over time as a result of many influences.
The modern suit’s squared shoulder and flat-laying collar was inspired by military uniforms. Those single and double vents? Originated from the need of added comfort while on horseback. The lounge suit (the correct name for our modern suit) first appeared in the mid-19th century and as time passed as men descended upon the era of the office, this garment soon become the norm.
Fast-forward to today and men are now living in the golden age of suiting – there’s colours and patterns to experiment with, different cuts and styles and depending on where you work – it’s up to you how you style your suit. Whether you’re looking for a classic option or something a little more casual, here’s our tips on how to get it right.
CLASSIC WITH A TWIST
As a nod of respect to those in your presence, wearing a great suit signifies the expense and effort that has gone into preparing for the occasion. With that in mind, if you’re looking for a classic look with noteworthy details, you can’t go past a three-piece suit. No longer is it considered an excessively formal look but rather a timeless and classic way to impress. Oh, and don’t forget a tie bar and pocket square – they’re the necessary finishing touches.

Break free from tradition with a few modern twists. For those looking to try a bolder look, the window pane check is a strong yet subtle stand on the charcoal suit and when it comes to footwear, black shoes are always your best mates. Work black into charcoal and grey suits for a modern yet classic edge. Also, while we’re on the topic of shoes, try swapping your standard shoe for a pair of dress boots. There’s the Monk strap boot for this season’s take on the hugely popular standard monk strap (and definitely a front-runner in our eyes!).

CASUAL ON TREND
When it comes to casual suiting, it’s all about relaxing the rules but (and this is a big but) maintaining sophistication. Making use of pieces already in your wardrobe is the easiest way to break up your 9-5 look – think new outfit combinations, textured patterns and relaxed shirts. Tie or no tie, buttoned or undone – the right pieces and a perfect fit are sure to be a winning combination at work.
