The 2014 Myer Fashions on the Field competition has been one of the most exciting and best yet, with contestants, designers and milliners from all over the country coming together to showcase their incredible talent. It was a traditional affair this year, with major winners in all categories presenting variations on monochrome looks.

Nikki Phillips and Myer menswear designer Jeff Banks were exceptional hosts, welcoming entrants, judges, the media and crowds of curious onlookers each day. The Men’s Racewear award was the first to be decided on Derby Day with a strong selection of handsome male contestants showing off their sartorial prowess. With the external hem on the pant a popular addition to men’ styling this year, the award went to Peter Tran in his light grey tartan suit which he accessorised with a brown hat, shoes and tie.

Later in the week, Melbourne Cup Day saw the Design Award won by Anthony Capon, who created a beautiful black and white checked one shoulder dress that featured an elaborate origami-style folded detail on the shoulder and a slightly longer hemline. After being announced as the winner, Anthony told the crowd he had created the monochrome dress from existing pieces of fabric he already had in his workshop and therefore hadn’t needed to buy any new materials. Thrifty!

Two of the most prestigious awards of the competition were awarded on Crown Oaks Day. The invitation-only Millinery Award was presented to Jill & Jack, whose white-on-white sinamay and leather headpiece was both technically impressive and incredibly beautiful. Later in the day, Victorian State Finalist Brodie Worrell took out the coveted Women’s Racewear national title in a beautiful white Maticevski dress, Felicity Northeast headpiece and perfectly balanced black accessories, and was completely lost for words when presented with her winning sash by Face of Myer Jennifer Hawkins. Brodie took home a stack of amazing prizes, including a brand new Lexus car and a huge Myer shopping spree – congratulations Brodie!
