Premium Australian label Skin & Threads has arrived at Myer and we couldn’t be more exited to get into their incredible range of high quality lifestyle and wardrobe staple pieces. We caught up with Creative Director & Founder Penny Cohen to find out a bit more about her brand.
Myer: How and when was Skin & Threads born?
Penny Cohen: Em (Emma Gathercole, Director & Founder) and I met 10 years ago at University which sparked a fabulous business partnership and really, it went from there…
M: What sets S&T apart from other brands?
PC: We really focus on elevated lifestyle clothing – something that you bring into your wardrobe, love and wear again and again.
M: As a designer, how do you keep motivated to create something new, and where does your inspiration come from?
PC: Life is ever changing and thus, so is fashion. This is really where I get my motivation from – to continuously change and evolve.
M: Who is the Skin & Threads woman?
PC: A woman that loves to feel good in what they wear and appreciates quality.
M: What brands/designers do you look to for inspiration?
PC: This is hugely varied – from Phoebe Philo, who is a consistent favourite, to other designers like Dries Van Noten, whose latest show in Paris was incredible.
M: What is the current collection all about?
PC: We looked to the “Birth of Cool” movement in the 1940s. Architects, designers, artists, musicians and drop outs all saw California as a new frontier. Skin and Threads looked at the work of artists like Frederick Hammersley and Karl Benjamin, the prolific output of designers like Ray and Charles Eames and the homes of Richard Neutra and imagined a collection made from these Modernist, mid-century roots. Looking to create cool, comfortable, easy, liveable, luxury was as much the idea of the mid-century designers as it was for Skin and Threads ‘Winter Breaks’ collection.
