Miss Shop x Street Smith

Ever wondered what goes on in the life of a fashion buyer or designer? Last week Liz McLeish of Melbourne fashion blog Street Smith dropped by the Myer office to catch up with some of the talented members of our Miss Shop team to find out what goes on in their world.

Miss Shop Buyer & Product Developer

Street Smith: Describe to us your average day at the Miss Shop office!
Ashleigh Bawden: Emails, fits, emails, fabric approvals, marketing meetings, gossip in the tea room, brief artwork and design, emails, Instagram check and a run through of the best sellers.

S: How do you forecast what trends shoppers will love?
AB: I am constantly on Instagram looking to see how trends are starting to come through as well as using bloggers and international catwalks for inspiration. Then it’s about deciphering these trends for the Australian market

S: What are three key pieces we should be buying this season?
AB: A pastel pink coat, ripped Boyfriend Jean and anything with a high neck

S: How does Australian style differ from the rest of the world?
AB: We are definitely more relaxed and have more fun in terms of colour, especially in Summer. Australian Swim ranges are hard to beat and we are lucky we don’t need to wear thermals in Winter!

Designer for Miss Shop Exclusive brands – Tokito and Milk & Honey

S: What lead you to working in fashion design?
MC: I was at university, studying another course and instead of doing my assignments I found myself shopping in second-hand stores looking for garments that I could alter to wear out on the weekend… I realized then, that I need a change in direction.

S: How do you keep on top of trends?
MC: We look to many sources such as magazines, blogs and online trend services but social media is probably the biggest tool now when tracking and determining trends for our customer. It gives us instant insight into our market which is always changing.

S: Is it exciting seeing one of your own designs in the street or even wearing them in the office?
MC: It’s an amazing feeling to see my sketches come to life but is even more rewarding to see them on someone in the street – I have been caught staring people down to get a better look at them!

S: If you had to describe your personal style in three words what would they be?
MC: All Black Everything

S: Favourite beauty product in your makeup bag right now?
MC: YSL Touche Eclat – to hide those dark circles under my eyes… I’m a night owl.

Product Development Assistant

S: What does a day in the life look like for a Product Development Assistant at Miss Shop?
AZ: Each day can be completely different to the next, some weeks I will be ranging either summer or winter styles for the brands I look after with our team, other days I will be completing numerous fabric and colour approvals. Some days involve fittings, attending supplier appointments, each day can be completely different to the next which is why I love the role so much!

S: In an office full of fashionable ladies, how much is your personal style influenced by the people around you?
AZ: My personal style is definitely influenced by the other Miss Shop girls in the office. Everyone has their own unique personal style which I draw inspiration from for my own outfits

S: What is your one fashion regret?
AZ: Wearing hats and shoes that matched my dresses…I blame my mum for that one

S: What is your current fashion obsession?
AZ: I am loving any skirt or dress with a split right now. For winter, fluffy and big roll neck knits!
