Every year the Melbourne Cup Carnival comes alive at Flemington with vibrant and beautiful fashion, with racegoers pulling out all the stops to create the perfect race day look. The Myer Fashions on the Field competition is widely regarded as one of Australia’s premier outdoor fashion events, attracting entrants from all corners of the globe.
Initially created in 1962 by the Victoria Racing Club as a way to attract more women to the races, Myer Fashions on the Field has since become as one of Australia’s most exciting outdoor fashion events. With VIP judges including the likes of Dita Von Teese, Coco Rocha and Tyson Beckford in recent years, plus entrants from all corners of the globe, the competition has become something of an icon at the races.
The Myer Fashions on the Field Women’s Racewear category is perhaps the most well-known, with State Finalists being selected from competitions across six states throughout the year. These finalists then compete in the National Final on Crown Oaks Day, with the winner taking home the coveted national title along with some incredible prizes, including a Lexus IS 300h Sport and a $6,000 Myer Shopping Spree! With prizes like that, it’s no wonder the competition is so popular and the standard is so high!
Aside from the popular Women’s Racewear category, the competition also features a Men’s Racewear competition, along with the prestigious invitation-only Design and Millinery Awards to recognise the fantastic contribution designers & milliners make to the Melbourne Cup Carnival.
The competition line-up takes place over three glamorous days:
- AAMI Victoria Derby Day – Women’s Racewear Heats, Men’s Racewear Heats and final
- Emirates Melbourne Cup Day – Women’s Racewear Heats and Design Award
- Crown Oaks Day – Women’s Racewear Heats, Women’s Racewear Victorian State Final, Millinery Award and Women’s Racewear National Final
How you can enter Myer Fashions on the Field
If you want a shot at the fashionable title, we strongly recommend registering online. With more than 1100 entrants each year, there are limited registrations on the day so it’s a great idea to avoid disappointment. We’ll be back again next year and you can check out this years winners here.
Limited registrations on the day will be taken at the Myer Fashions on the Field Enclosure, located at The Fashion Precinct on the front lawn between the following times:
AAMI Victoria Derby Day: Women 10.15am-11.00am and Men 12.45pm-1.15pm
Emirates Melbourne Cup Day: Women 10.15am-11.00am
Crown Oaks Day: Women 11.00am – 11.45am
How to create a winning look
So what exactly do the judges look for and how can you ensure you stand out from the rest of the competition? The official criteria for judging include things like style and originality, attention to detail and adherence to the dress code of each race day. So make sure your outfit nods to the latest trends, while also showing off your personal style in an elegant and graceful way.
As a point of inspiration, it’s a great idea to check out what gave past winners the edge and maybe do a little research on the judges when they are announced. Last year’s Women’s Racewear Winner Chloe Moo took the title with a highly original printed dress and extravagant matching fascinator. The fabric used was screen printed by Merrepen Arts at a community south of Darwin in the Northern Territory, giving Chloe a completely distinctive, home-grown look that wowed the judges.
Once you’ve found your winning look, the most important thing to remember is to just enjoy the day. 2013 Men’s Racewear winner Palmer Mutandwa charmed the judges, not only with his dapper grey ensemble but with an infectious smile that won over the whole enclosure.
So with only a few weeks to go, now is the time to start getting prepared and planning your outfit. You can see our race wear edit here and be sure to lock all the important race days into your calendar. See you on the field!
