Catering for the playful yet sophisticated women’s wardrobe, Lulu & Rose embodies a contemporary and feminine aesthetic, making them our new go-to brand for the season. We caught up with designer Natalie Binns to find out more Lulu & Rose’s take on this season’s must-try trends.

Myer: Tell us a little about your background – had you always wanted to be a fashion designer?
Natalie Binns: I’ve always been interested in fashion but I actually studied law at university! I’m glad I did it because as well as being an incredible degree to have, it taught me that I really needed to be doing something more creative with my life. After uni I tried really hard to get my foot in the door in the fashion industry but I felt like no one was reading my CV. Eventually I enrolled in a course at the London College of Fashion and interned at ASOS.com which lead to me getting a job in fashion buying. My role involved lots of product development so moving into design was a natural progression.
M: How was Lulu & Rose created?
NB: We saw a gap in the market for a feminine and fun fashion label which delivers the latest catwalk trends but in a wearable and affordable way. We work close to season to ensure every collection provides the newest silhouettes and cater to the girl who knows what the latest trends are but looks for a point of difference.
M: Do you have a current muse?
NB: It constantly changes, but generally I’m inspired by what I see girls wearing in the street and how they style themselves. Recently I’ve also been following the model Adwoa Aboah. She’s obviously beautiful but also really eloquent and outspoken on various issues which is a quality I really admire.
M: Where or what do you look to for design inspiration?
NB: I love to travel and I’m constantly inspired by my surroundings – buildings, music, art and people in the street. I also love Instagram because I can follow everything and everyone I’m into and just scroll away whether I’m on the bus or in the queue at the supermarket. My phone is full of screenshots! I can be researching a new collection when I’ll see a great make up idea for a look book or a great detail for next season and I love Pinterest for keeping track of everything.
M: Tell us about the new collection?
NB: For the Winter 2 range I was inspired by an Autumn trip to Paris resulting in an effortless layered look which mixes textures, soft neutral tones and subtle 70s references.
M: What are you three must-have pieces from this collection?
NB: Columbus Lightweight Trench Coat – we took inspiration from Menswear when developing this slightly oversized shape.
Bowery Flared Sleeve Top – I love the subtle 70s reference in the sleeve shape.
Leonard Dipped Hem Skirt – this is a flattering update to the full midi skirt. I love to dress this down with a knit and sneakers.
